Emit wants to produce your interactive work!
Emit Theatre seeks submissions for new, interactive plays for young audiences. We are accepting original scripts that have not been previously produced, as well as concepts for devised pieces, from NYC-based artists. This production will be performed for public audiences in Spring 2021 and subsequently toured to schools and community groups. The selected applicant will be compensated with a stipend.
Submitted stories must center a population that has been historically underrepresented in theatre. Inspiration for the piece can include but is not limited to: a folk tale, legend, piece of music, visual art piece, or historical event.
Requirements for submissions:
-
For young people within the age range of 4-11.
-
40-60 minutes in length.
-
Can be performed with 1-5 actors.
-
Appropriate for up to 70 audience members.
-
If submission is an original script, it must be finished and ready for rehearsal (although the script is free to continue developing throughout the process).
-
Must include specific opportunities for interaction throughout. Examples of appropriate interaction include but are not limited to: call and response, group movement, posing questions to the audience, or bringing a small group onstage to help with a task.
-
Must be able to become a sensory friendly, relaxed performance
It is desired that applicants have experience with interactive performance, but it is not required. The selected applicant will train with Artistic Director Gianna Cioffi to develop the interactive elements of the piece in harmony with Emit’s style and community.
Due to Covid-19, play submissions will be accepted on a rolling basis. At this point we cannot guarantee a performance schedule, but we will contact strong applicants to further discuss their piece and vision.
